How to Choose a Computer For Students : Tips For Choosing A Computer To Buy

A good and respectful student must now have a laptop computer. This equipment has now become indispensable for the successful completion of his studies, whether you are a college, high school or university student. In fact, a laptop is generally needed to do research, to participate or have access to online conferences, to do practical work or even to take notes during classes.

However, you may end up getting lost in your choices with the countless offers that are available on the market. In this guide, we will therefore present you with the criteria you need to take into account and some models of student laptops to simplify your task.

Laptop or desktop?

The laptop is the student’s essential companion. Why is it so? Because it allows you to work at home on a desk, then relax by watching videos or playing while lying in bed or on the couch, but also to take it with you to university or school for note-taking and/or classes. The ultra-portable, in particular, offers both its lightness and its more compact size that makes it easy to store in a backpack.

Weight and dimensions

Since we’re talking about a student laptop, it goes without saying that you shouldn’t have any trouble bringing it to class, to the library or anywhere you should go. This is why it is essential that you pay maximum attention to its lightness. Indeed, some models may weigh less than one kilogram while others may weigh more than two kilos.

For this reason, it is preferable to bend over for the ultra-light model. Then, you must also take into account the dimensions of your computer. The ideal would be to have a model that is as compact as possible (in length, width and thickness) when folded. This way, you won’t have to worry about clutter, especially since there are now all kinds of bags with compartments specially designed for laptops.

A powerful processor is not the priority for this use, it is better to go for low-power models to promote a better autonomy. Of course, this will depend on the uses, but it is better to have a medium-powered laptop that will be with you for a long time than an over-equipped PC whose full power will only be used exceptionally well and whose battery will run out after 3 hours!

The first thing you need to check is the RAM, which is expressed in GB.  This is the computer’s random access memory. In other words, it will define the data storage capacity of the machine.

In general, a 4GB RAM would be more than enough if your computer’s use is limited to office use and has done a little research on the Internet. But, you need to invest in a much more powerful model if you need to work on specific software in your studies.

Otherwise, you risk wasting your precious time waiting as your computer may take some time to execute your order.

In addition to this, you may be required to view various images and videos as a student. Therefore, you will also need to check the graphics card of your future computer. This is the element that will define your multimedia limit.

To be able to work on your laptop efficiently and with ease, it is essential that you consider its autonomy. You may not always have access to an electrical outlet where you need to work. It is therefore strongly recommended that you find out about the battery life of the battery that will equip your future computer.

The autonomy of the batteries that are offered on the market is very variable, ranging from 2 to 9 hours. In addition, it is very difficult to quantify the average duration of this component of the laptop.

Also, thanks to the evolution of new technology, it is not very difficult to find models that guarantee up to 14 hours of autonomy nowadays. It goes without saying then that the more autonomy you have, the better.

Whenever possible, choose a computer with an SSD disk. SSDs are faster, speeding up both your operating system and your software. The other advantage is that they are shock-proof, unlike hard drives. And they are far less resource-hungry, which is a very important consideration when you’re on the go! Except if you have a specific storage need, there’s no need to go for large capacities, backing up regularly to an external hard disk will be more efficient in order to keep enough free space.

Other criteria

Having USB 3.0 ports or even type C ports (reversible) is a plus, to easily transfer files from a recent smartphone or to make the most of the speed of an external hard drive. The presence of a memory card reader, to empty the card of a digital camera or to exchange documents in a jiffy is just as welcome. A memory card reader also allows you to expand your storage space.

The touch screen can also be a critical aspect for some users on Windows 10. If you don’t really use it, keep in mind that a touch screen is still more expensive to produce than a conventional screen. On the other hand, a matte tile will be more comfortable in bright environments and/or outdoors, while a glossy tile will offer a more attractive display, but also much more prone to reflections.
